Lagos’s most exciting art destination Rele Gallery has announced the launch of a new exhibition, ‘Everyday People’ a photography series on some particular Lagos citizens shot by breakout photographer, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole.
The gallery known for its artistic innovation and unprecedented exhibition offerings and their chosen subject matter, has again done the unexpected, taking on an artist that would be in most circles considered a late bloomer. Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, in her other life is a lecturer at the Department of Jurisprudence and International Law, Faculty of Law, University of Lagos.
The series ‘Everyday People’ is an attempt to chronicle social change. It is a turn of lens on the beautifully ordinary characters that dot the Lagos landscape, on the everyday icons of our sprawling metropolis. It captures these particular citizens that are the heart and soul of the city, at their most raw, going about their seemingly uncluttered lives yet with industry, contemplation, atimes resignation and ultimately with resilience. The series was shot over a one year period in popular, throbbing urban areas- Jakande, Agric Market, Ojuelegba, Jankara market and Iddo.
The exhibition berthed in a private opening last Sunday and immediately sparked conversations about social change and garnered on-site sterling reviews. Guests went further to put their money where their mouths were, with 70% of the work being sold on the day.
The exhibition opens to the public from the 20th of October 2015, at the gallery – 5 Military Street, Onikan, Lagos.
